Following on from my map porn the other day, made some more. The traditional atlases of the world always has distortions, from trying to present a round object that is the globe onto a two dimensional flat surface. Thus the notorious Mercator version, that was traditionally used to increase the size of northern (read: Western) countries has been accused of long peddling the incorrect sizes of landmasses to millions in generation after generation.
In truth, countries compared…
Ecuador is bigger than the UK:
Laos slightly smaller
Next off, England:
Russia population 145 million, Bangladesh 165 million:
Yes, this is what I do with my time.
It is perhaps telling that it is wasted, that there is nothing much more to say, and that this has nothing much connected to life, to anything that is going on outside. It is a representation of some realm beyond the every day, conceptually imagining as far from this small, harboured life. This abstraction is key: there appears nothing more to say.
It may be time to put down the pen.
